45 RPM records were developed by RCA in 1948 to replace the 78 RPM records that were common for the first 40 years of recorded music. Probably the most attractive thing about the 45 was that they were cheap in comparison to the price of LPs (larger 33 1/3 RPM records, introduced by Columbia at the same time). By the early 1950’s, standard record players were modified to handle all three speeds (and sizes) through the use of adapter rings.

We still play records all the time here at GENT, and we love the idea of preserving this quirky but significant time in music history.  Plus, the design is so cool, even if onlookers don't get it, they'll think you're sporting a rockin pair of cufflinks. Pun intended.
